BC Confederation Cover

1871 (early August) Wells, Fargo & Co. printed frank on U.S. 6c dark red on white entire from Victoria, V.I. to Alton, England, opening tear at top; showing "For Great Britain and Ireland" two-line handstamp in blue as per Postal Convention (July 1, 1870) and same-ink Wells Fargo & Co. / Victoria cancel with unclear August date - without the normal colonial postage (sold on that merit) possibly because British Columbia had joined Confederation on July 20, 1871 and was awaiting shipment of Canadian stamps (went on sale August 15). An interesting interlude which may well explain the lack of BC / Canadian stamps; the U.S. 6c postage paid the reduced rate (previously 12c) from California to the U.K., partial New York Paid All circular in transit in red and clear Alton AU 30 71 backstamp. A neat interim period cover mailed shortly after Confederation but before Canadian stamps were available and rates were applied, Fine to Very Fine; ex. Barkhausen (with his backstamp), James Pike (June 1980; Lot 2186)
