Postal rates to the Australian States were notoriously confusing to Postmasters. For example, in 1877 the rate to New South Wales was 15c per half ounce, via the US. However, mail to four other Australian Colonies was 8c per half ounce. Additionally, the postal rate at that time to all Australian States via Southampton, UK as of October 1876 was 16c per half ounce. Letters such as this example, were often sent with extra postage in the event of forwarding by a different route.
